About Us
Design is at the core of Altitude's existence. John VanderLaan, President and owner of Altitude Architecture & Construction Co. has a passion for design. Raised in the Midwest by European parents, John gained an appreciation for art which grew into a love of architecture. John's great-grandfather, an oven mason in the Netherlands, channeled the desire to build. Trained as an architect at the University of Notre Dame, John studied form and function as well as the classics during a year of study in Rome, Italy.
With a foundation in design, John turned his attention to construction and headed west to complete a Master's in Real Estate and Construction at the University of Denver's Daniel's College of Business. After completing his degree in 1993, John dove into the Denver home building industry, and has grown along with it ever since.
Working on projects in the Denver area including a lakefront community and a proposed private country club, John gained insight into the varied housing types and construction methods unique to the Denver area. Branching off on his own, John started Altitude Architecture & Construction Co. in the spring of 2004 as a design-build company focusing on residential remodels and additions. As his pool of talented trades has grown, so has the size of projects, eventually leading to custom home development.
